ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team scored a pair of goals off its penalty-corner attack en route to a 2-1 win against Indiana in its season opener on Friday (March 5) at Phyllis Ocker Field.

U-M largely dominated play throughout the contest, outshooting the Hoosiers, 17-4, and outcornering them, 14-2, and scored its goals early in the first and second quarters.

Junior Katie Anderson scored the first goal of the delayed 2020-21 season off a broke corner at the 2:35 mark. Freshman Anouk Veen, who earned assists on both Wolverine goals, could not get a shot off at the top of the arc, but the ball ricocheted off her stick to Anderson on the right side. The Wolverine junior hammered a shot that found the opposite, left-side lower corner. Anderson owns four goals in her career.

Michigan (1-0, 1-0 Big Ten) struck again at 15:44 -- just 44 seconds into the second quarter -- on another corner opportunity. Veen took the insert from junior Kathryn Peterson and fired a shot to the right post, where senior Kayla Reed laid out to get her stick on it and redirect near side past the IU goalkeeper. Reed boasts 15 career goals.

Indiana (0-3, 0-3 Big Ten) used its own corner attack to get on the board in the waning seconds of the first half at 29:22, scoring on a rebound from its inserter after freshman goalkeeper Gillian Dumont made a stop on the initial direct shot. Dumont finished with two saves in her collegiate debut in the cage.

Michigan nearly added another goal off another penalty corner early in the fourth. Anderson carried the ball to the right side and fired a shot to the opposite post, where it hit a stick and redirected high -- into the crossbar. U-M held 10-2 and 8-1 advantages in shots and corners, respectively, in the second half. Hoosier goalkeeper Shannon McNally posted seven saves before getting pulled late for an extra attacker.

The Wolverines hit the road next weekend, traveling to Iowa City to play a two-game set against Iowa at Grant Field. U-M will start off the trip with a 3 p.m. CST slate on Friday (March 12) before wrapping up at noon CDT on Sunday (March 14).
