Resnick: Mets Bringing Back Tommy Hunter on Minor League Deal

According to SNY’s Jacob Resnick, the Mets are bringing back veteran reliever Tommy Hunter on a minor league deal. Resnick notes that Hunter will be heading to the team’s Alternate Site in Brooklyn.

The Mets signed Hunter to a minor league deal earlier this offseason. Despite issuing four walks, Hunter pitched well in camp. The big right-hander struck out three and posted just a 3.60 ERA over five innings of work.

Hunter had an opt-out clause in his contract on March 24, and after not being added to the 40-Man roster, was granted his released by the Mets a day later.

Hunter is 13-year veteran who spent the past three seasons in the National League East pitching for the Philadelphia Phillies. During that span, he tossed 94 innings and posted a 3.64 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 3.42 FIP, with 81 strikeouts and just 21 walks.

While Hunter is on the older side and has seen his velocity decrease a bit over the past couple of seasons, he is a legit big league reliever and serves as a solid depth piece for the Mets bullpen.
